How Mobile Wallets Power Cameroon's Sportsbooks

A Cameroonian bettor rarely touches a bank card. Deposits, stakes and withdrawals move through a phone wallet, and operators build their payment pages around two telecom brands. The rules behind those wallets matter as much as the apps. Cameroon regulates betting under Law No. 2015/012, with a 2019 decree setting out how the law applies to casinos, betting and public lotteries.

Two Wallets Carry the Market

MTN Mobile Money leads. Betting guides describe MoMo as the main payment method for online betting in Cameroon. Orange Money ranks close behind as the second most popular deposit method. Nearly every licensed brand supports both. Almost all bookmakers offer Orange and MTN for deposits and withdrawals, sometimes through intermediaries such as MoneyGo. One guide estimates that nearly 90% of sports bets in Cameroon come from mobile devices.

Licensing sits with the Ministry of Territorial Administration (MINAT). Licence numbers appear on operator sites, such as PMUC's MINAT licence 000001, 1xBet's 000020 and Betwinner's 000036.

The Aggregator Layer

Most sportsbooks do not connect to each wallet directly. As of May 2026, MTN Mobile Money and Orange Money were confirmed on 1xBet, 22Bet, 1Win, Megapari and Melbet through the INTOUCH aggregator.

A single aggregator link gives operators access to both networks at once. The trade-off shows up in fees, because each wallet transaction passing through the aggregator attracts a charge. Some brands skip wallets altogether. BC.Game operates as a crypto-only site with no MTN or Orange Money support. Crypto-only access remains a niche option in a market built on telecom wallets.

What Each Transaction Costs

Tax sits on every wallet movement. Cameroon's 2025 finance law brought gaming platforms into the money transfer tax, applied since 2022. The standard rate is 0.2%, but transfers and withdrawals through gaming platforms pay 1%.

The effect is easy to calculate. A 50,000 FCFA withdrawal from a betting platform triggers a 500 FCFA tax. Betting guides describe the charge as 1% plus 4 FCFA on mobile money transactions routed through INTOUCH since 30 January 2025.

Winnings face a separate deduction. Cameroon's finance law sets a 15% withholding tax on certain gaming winnings. Premier Bet deducts the 15% automatically, according to one comparison site's testers.

Limits, Speed and Cash Options

Wallet limits shape how players bet. On 1xBet in Cameroon, minimum deposits start at 100 CFA through MTN or Orange, against 500 CFA for bank transfers. Daily wallet deposits and withdrawals cap at 1,000,000 CFA.

Speed differs between the two networks. One guide reports average MTN payouts of 10 to 20 minutes on 1xBet and Melbet, with Orange Money taking 20 to 45 minutes.

Retail links still matter. Premier Bet lets players build a bet slip online, generate a booking code, then pay in cash at a shop or through Mobile Money. Its payment list also includes Visa, Mastercard, vouchers and Express Union.

Real-Time Tax Targets Wallet Flows

The next change focuses on data. Cameroon's tax authority plans real-time taxation from 2026 in four sectors, including mobile telephony and gaming. The DGI expects 30 to 40 billion FCFA in extra revenue in the pilot year.

Gaming is a large target. Betting and games of chance now generate more than 100 billion FCFA a year. Telecoms, led by MTN and Orange, earn over 600 billion FCFA annually, driven by Mobile Money growth.

Built on Two Networks

Cameroonian sportsbooks run on MoMo and Orange Money, with aggregators such as INTOUCH linking them to both. Wallet compatibility now means more than accepting deposits. Operators also carry the 1% transfer tax, the 15% winnings deduction and an incoming real-time tax system.
