PartnershipAltenar Joins IBIA as Africa's Betting Market Heads for US$19.4bn
Altenar has joined IBIA as African betting GGR heads for US$19.4bn by 2030. Here is what the membership means for match-fixing monitoring across the continent.
Sportsbook supplier Altenar has become a member of the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA), linking its African growth plans to a global match-fixing monitoring network. The move comes as regulators and operators across the continent put more attention on betting integrity.
The timing follows the market's growth curve. IBIA's 2025 Sports Betting Integrity Report, using H2 Gambling Capital data, expects African gross gaming revenue to rise from US$3.5 billion in 2021 to US$19.4 billion by 2030. Online betting should account for US$16.4 billion of that total.
A Market Built on Phones and Football
African betting already runs mostly on mobile. GeoPoll's 2026 study across Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda found that 95% of bettors use mobile devices. Two in three bettors, 67%, mainly bet on football.
Digital scale brings digital risk. As more markets regulate and connect online, suspicious betting patterns cross borders faster, and no single operator or regulator sees the full picture. Shared monitoring fills that gap.
What IBIA Brings to the Table
IBIA is a not-for-profit body focused on protecting sports betting from corruption. Its members cover more than 90 companies and 200 betting brands.
The association's reach is wide. IBIA's Global Monitoring & Alert Platform tracks more than 1.5 million sporting events across over 80 sports. Each year, the platform reviews customer activity linked to more than US$300 billion in global betting turnover.
Africa already appears in its data. From 2020 to Q3 2025, IBIA reported 131 suspicious betting alerts on African sporting events, mostly in football (64) and tennis (62).
How Membership Fits Altenar's African Plans
Altenar supplies sportsbook platforms to operators, pairing its technology with local market knowledge and localisation for different regulatory and commercial needs. Membership connects the company to a wider network of operators and stakeholders working to spot and address integrity risks.
Regional differences make that network useful. African betting markets are maturing at uneven speeds, so cross-border cooperation matters more as Altenar expands. The company also presents membership as proof of its commitment to the long-term health of the markets it serves.
Altenar Sales Manager Jacob Portelli said Africa's potential depends on building trust alongside technology and commercial offers. "Integrity is a shared responsibility across the industry," he said, adding that IBIA membership lets Altenar contribute to that effort.
IBIA's View of Africa's Regulatory Gap
IBIA CEO Khalid Ali described Africa as a mix of opportunity and risk for regulated operators. He warned that "the dangers from unregulated operators and match-fixers threatens to derail progress."
Ali also said African regulation still trails leading jurisdictions such as Ontario and Alberta on betting integrity measures, despite progress in many areas. He said Altenar, like other members, had committed to integrity monitoring and reporting to help close that gap.
Part of a Wider Integrity Push
The Altenar deal builds on IBIA's growing work in Africa. In November 2025, IBIA signed a memorandum of understanding with the African iGaming Alliance. Under the deal, IBIA became the AIA's strategic integrity partner, while the AIA became IBIA's main policy and regulation partner for Africa.
The MoU covers information exchange, joint engagement and coordinated policy work to protect consumers, regulated operators and sport from betting-related match-fixing. Supplier memberships such as Altenar's add platform-level data to that effort.
Integrity as a Growth Condition
Africa's betting growth now depends on more than new licences and mobile reach. With forecasts pointing to a US$19.4 billion market by 2030, suppliers and operators that plug into shared monitoring networks give regulators more reason to trust the regulated sector.
